Drift

Updated: Jul 18, 2021

I close my eyes

and notice

the subtle drift

of the canoe

The pulse of sunlight

is nearly audible and

the current is subtle⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There is no neutral

I trust where this

river is running

but the sun is setting ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

and so, I row

to get to where I

think I'm going

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My raw hands

rest the oars

The lake breathes

cool relief

across my palms

and the lazy

hollow sound of the oars

knock against the

bottom of the boat

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I close my eyes to

the deepening sky

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I wake to the rainfall

sound of reeds

brushing against

my vessel

where I've been

gathered by the shore

and cradled in bullrushes

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
